Bertha Champion Garcia was the adopted mother of John Anthony Garcia who was married to Betty Hardee. She is also the mother of Mary Bertha Ann Garcia Mallet, mother of Stephen A. Mallet who married Leigh Gayle Smith, daughter of Suzanne Hardee Smith-Trice.

BERTHA CHAMPION GARCIA

Bertha Champion Garcia, of Brownsville, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at Brownsville Medical Center.
She was born in Port Isabel and was a descendant of Charles A. Champion of Port Isabel. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was preceded in death by her husband, J. Alex Garcia Sr., in 1985, and a son, John A. Garcia, in 1995.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Garcia Burns of Raymondville and Mary Bertha Garcia Mallet of McAllen; a son, J.A. Garcia Jr. of Raymondville; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated today at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church with the Rev. Joseph O'Brien, O.M.I., officiating. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Pallbearers will be Ted Burns III, Stephen Mallet, Michael Mallet, Lawrence Mallet, J. Alex Garcia III and John A. Garcia Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Port Isabel Historical Museum, 317 E. Railroad Ave., Port Isabel, TX 78578.
